Koh Rong Island Guide – The Top 10 Things To Know Before Coming To Koh Rong

Are you planning a trip to the stunning island of Koh Rong? You’re in for a treat! Koh Rong, located off the coast of Cambodia, is a paradise for beach lovers and nature enthusiasts. However, before you set foot on this breathtaking island, there are a few things you should know to ensure you have the best experience possible. From transportation to accommodation and everything in between, here are the top ten things you need to know before coming to Koh Rong.

1. Transportation:

Getting to Koh Rong is relatively easy, but it’s essential to plan ahead. The main port for accessing the island is Sihanoukville, where you’ll find regular ferry services departing for Koh Rong. Make sure to check the ferry schedules in advance and allow plenty of time to catch your boat.

2. Accommodation:

Koh Rong offers a range of accommodation options to suit every budget. From budget-friendly guesthouses to luxurious beachfront resorts, you’ll have no shortage of choices. Keep in mind that availability can be limited during peak season, so it’s advisable to book your accommodation in advance. December, January & February can be difficult to find a room, so booking ahead is advisable.

3. Cash:

While some places on Koh Rong accept credit cards, it’s recommended to carry enough cash with you. There are no ATMs on the island, so ensure you have enough money for your stay, including food, activities, and any additional expenses that may arise. We expect an ATM be on the island within the next 2 years as the island is connected to mains electricity grid.

4. Electricity:

The island has limited electricity supply, and power outages are not uncommon. Be prepared for occasional blackouts and bring a portable charger for your electronic devices. It’s also a good idea to bring a flashlight or headlamp, as some areas may not have adequate lighting. The island is in the process of connecting to the main electricity grid, so we expect that to be running in the main areas by end of 2023.

5. Wi-Fi:

If you’re expecting a seamless internet connection throughout your stay, think again. Wi-Fi on Koh Rong can be slow and unreliable, particularly in remote areas. We would suggest buying a Smart sim card and an internet plan for reliable speeds, or embrace the opportunity to disconnect completely and enjoy the island’s natural beauty instead.

6. Mosquitoes:

Mosquitoes are a common nuisance on Koh Rong, especially during the wet season (May to October). Remember to bring insect repellent to protect yourself from bites. Additionally, consider wearing light-colored, long-sleeved clothing in the evenings to minimize exposure.

7. Beaches:

Koh Rong is renowned for its pristine beaches, so don’t forget to pack your swimwear and sunscreen. The most popular beaches, such as Long Set Beach and Sok San Beach, offer crystal-clear waters and powdery white sand. However, be aware that some areas may have rocky shores, so bring appropriate footwear if needed.

8. Snorkeling and Diving:

Koh Rong boasts incredible marine life and vibrant coral reefs, making it a paradise for snorkelers and divers. If you’re interested in exploring the underwater world, consider taking a boat tour or arranging a diving excursion. Remember to bring your snorkeling gear or rent it from a local dive center.

9. Wildlife:

Koh Rong is home to various wildlife species, including monkeys and exotic birds. Respect the animals and admire them from a safe distance. Feeding or attempting to interact with the wildlife can have negative consequences for both you and the animals.

10. Waste Management:

Lastly, be mindful of your environmental impact during your visit to Koh Rong. The island has limited waste management facilities, so make an effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle. If possible, bring a reusable water bottle, avoid single-use plastics, and dispose of your trash responsibly.

With these top ten tips in mind, you’re well-prepared to make the most of your time on Koh Rong. Immerse yourself in the island’s natural wonders, soak up the sun on pristine beaches, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Koh Rong awaits you, so get ready for an unforgettable adventure!
